Ronald Rapini, MD, grew up in Akron, Ohio as the oldest of four children. He attended medical school at Ohio State University, and did an internship in Wisconsin at Marshfield Clinic, where he met his wife, Mary Jo Rapini. They have two adult daughters and three grandchildren.
Dr. Rapini trained in dermatology at the University of Iowa, and in dermatopathology at the University of Colorado. He moved to Texas in 1983, when he joined the the McGovern Medical School at UTHealth. The family moved to Lubbock, Texas from 1994 to 2002, where Dr. Rapini became the chair of dermatology at Texas Tech University. In 2002, he was recruited back to UTHealth to head an integrated department at the medical school and MD Anderson Cancer Center.
Dr. Rapini is the Distinguished Chernosky Professor and chair of the Department of Dermatology at the McGovern Medical School. Dr. Rapini also serves as chair of the Department of Dermatology at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, and professor of Pathology at both institutions.
Dr. Rapini specializes in seeing patients of all ages with problematic skin cancers and rashes, and is frequently a consultant for patients with difficult problems referred from dermatologists and other physicians throughout the region.
Dr. Rapini has served as Program Director for the Dermatology residency and a Dermatopathology Fellowship program. He has won many teaching awards, including the Nickel Award of the American Society of Dermatopathology in 2005. He also received the Founder’s Award from the ASDP in 2012. Dr. Rapini was the recipient of the annual Robert Freeman Mentoring and Leadership award from the Texas Dermatological Society in 2013. He is past president of several organizations, including the American Board of Dermatology, the American Society of Dermatopathology, the American Society for Mohs Surgery, the Texas Dermatological Society, and the Houston Dermatological Society. He is the author of more than 300 abstracts, books, and journal articles (131 peer-reviewed), and has had more than 440 presentations at major state, national, and international meetings. His popular Practical Dermatopathology textbook is one of the top-selling texts in the field.
